Aquaman film BACKLASH against ‘ABOMINATION’ – Why do fans hate THIS so much?

Aquaman is looking set to create some impressive waves for the DCEU as it opens in UK cinemas this weekend, followed by the US next week. It has already smashed all previous Warner Bros DC records in China, taking a whopping $95million there in its first week. It also has a strong 70& aggregate rating for reviews so far, against 28% for Dawn of Justice and 40% for Justice League. However there is one fly in the ocean/ointment. Everybody seems to really hate one thing in the movie.

The fun thing about backlashes is they are usually split between two opposing views. Not in this case.

Comments range from: “Well, here it is, the worst thing in music. According to my notes, though, Pitbull is breaking his own record,” to “I need new ears. Mine just died.”

One outraged fan even asked: “Is there a way this song could finally put Pitbull away for war crimes.?”

The internet has exploded in sheer horror at Pitbull’s treatment of one of the most popular and universally adored songs of all time. But are they missing the point? Is it supposed to be so bad it’s funny?

SCROLL DOWN TO LISTEN TO THE NEW PITBULL VERSION OF AFRICA (YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED)

The video for Ocean to Ocean has already wracked up over one million views in just two days. However, it also leads straight to the original song, which sits atop 428million views.

Toto’s 1983 original version is also currently beseiged with more comments from fans like: “Came here to clean my ears after that Pitbull version,” or “Needed that after the Pitbull abomination.”

One wit even suggested: “I like the Aquaman version better – Said no-one ever.”

The instantly recognisable reworked sample from the chorus only plays for a few seconds and is used to seque into a scene set in Africa. Whether or not Pitbull knows it, it is likely that the very meta and aware filmmakers have their tongue firmly in their cheeks.

Fans have pointed out people laughed when it played in the cinema, but perhaps this is intentional? The whole film is obviously happy to poke playful fun at itself and superhero tropes.

One fan pointed out: “This song is used in the movie to hilarious effect. I’m not even mad. It’s so campy it’s awesome.”

That said, the lyrics have no possibly connection to Aquaman in any way, for example: “Always against all eyez like Pac said, I’m the living Great Gatsby, But these boys will watch you quick and disappear like Banksy.”

Maybe the joke is on Pitbull…
