Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah snubbed by Reds legend in favour of Chelsea star Eden Hazard

Instead, Souness opted for Chelsea star Eden Hazard with the Belgian having found a new lease of life this season.

Salah has shone for Liverpool ever since joining from Roma in 2017, netting 32 Premier League goals in his debut season at Anfield.

That earned the Egyptian the Golden Boot and he already has ten goals this season in the league with 13 in all competitions.

Hazard meanwhile has seven Premier League strikes this campaign as well as eight assists.

Salah has the bragging rights when it comes to current league position though with Liverpool sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League.

They are one point ahead of Manchester City and a further five from Hazard’s Chelsea.

But Souness believes Hazard is the current greatest in the Premier League.

“If I could take one it would be Eden Hazard,” Souness told the Mail.

“I think Salah will be a better goalscorer but in terms of all-round play (Hazard).”

Salah scored the only goal as Liverpool beat Napoli to progress to the Champions League knockout stages on Tuesday.

The Egyptian capitalised on an error from Napoli left-back Mario Rui before shrugging off the challenge of centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.

Salah finished with aplomb, squeezing the ball through the legs of Arsenal loanee David Ospina in goal.

And Michael Owen was impressed with Salah’s strength and says it is time his ability to hold off defenders was given more credit.

“Huge moment, I thought Napoli settled into the game reasonably well in the first sort of 10 minutes,” Owen said on BT Sport.

“But then Liverpool have taken control.

“We’ve spoken a lot about Mo Salah and his finishing skill, his dribbling skills – rarely do people talk about his strength.

“He is as strong as an ox, people bounce off him.

“A couple of mistakes, three mistakes you’d say in the Napoli defence. Rui, then Koulibaly and then the goalkeeper.

“But from an attacking point of view, fantastic.”
