F1 news: Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel admits Charles Leclerc uncertainty

Four-time F1 champion Vettel has lined up alongside racing veteran Kimi Raikkonen for the past four years.

And they have enjoyed a positive relationship thanks to the Finn’s willingness to be Ferrari’s No 2 driver.

Ferrari announced in September that Raikkonen would be replaced by new kid on the block Leclerc for the 2019 campaign though.

And Leclerc has been backed to offer a challenge to Sebastian Vettel’s supremacy in Ferrari’s plans.

Vettel has now admitted he is unsure about how things will pan out between himself and the 21-year-old.

“I do not know that yet,” Vettel told Blick, when asked if his relationship with Leclerc will be harmonious.

“The harmony between me and Kimi meant that we did not have unnecessary banter.

“We have always left each other the necessary space – and thus spare the team unnecessary worries.

“Everyone is different, and how Charles and I will tick together will become apparent.

“But he is a well-bred boy – and Ferrari is a huge chance for him.

“The basic law will not change this time either: every one wants to beat the other.”

Vettel has followed in the footsteps of compatriot Michael Schumacher by driving for Ferrari.

And he admits he wishes he could chat to his old friend, who suffered life-changing injuries in a 2013 skiing accident.

“Yes, that still applies,” Vettel said, when asked if he misses Schumacher.

“Michael spent many years in Maranello and his spirit keeps hovering over the team!

“With Michael I would now speak the language of the driver and not the technician.

“That’s why talking would be extremely helpful. Because with Michael I always had a great relationship anyway. Yes, I miss him.”

Vettel will be eager to lay down a marker when the 2019 F1 season starts next March.

The campaign begins with the Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit.

And Vettel will be out to repeat the success he has enjoyed there three times during his career.
