Lionel Messi: Barcelona star opens up on free-kick technique, makes shock admission

The Nou Camp outfit won 4-0 on Saturday night with Messi netting a pair of wonderful set-pieces.

It came just days after he had been criticised by Brazil legend Pele for ‘only shoots with one leg, only has one skill, doesn’t head the ball well’.

Lionel Messi has netted a number of stunning free-kicks during his career, and he bagged his eighth and ninth set-piece this calendar year.

But the Argentinian superstar admitted he needed a bit of luck to score both.

“I try to follow a routine a bit, trying to do it the same way so that it goes well again,” Messi told Vamos.

“Other times I have a lot of free-kicks and I do not put them in. I was lucky enough to get two in a row.”

Messi has spent his whole career at Barcelona.

And the Argentina international feels that Barca’s decision to help him develop and stand by him during his difficulties was a key moment for him.

Messi said: “Well first and foremost, it’s everything for me, football at Barcelona and in this city.

“It’s not just my career but also my family.

“My kids were born here. I spent more time in this city than I have in my own country.

“The big decision they made for me, it made a huge difference.

“They helped me accomplish my biggest dreams.”

Messi’s Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde praised the ace after the Espanyol win.

“Messi is just extraordinary. The two goals, the chances created and what he gives us, he is extraordinary,” he said.

”I think it was a good game in general. We knew about the danger of Espanyol, especially at home, and they are a team that, aside from the last game, had won all of their matches here.”
