The US President lashed out at Mr Tillerson in an unprecedented series on insults published earlier today on Twitter. He wrote: “Mike Pompeo is doing a great job, I am very proud of him. His predecessor, Rex Tillerson, didn’t have the mental capacity needed. He was dumb as a rock and I couldn’t get rid of him fast enough.
Speaking to CBS News’s Bob Schieffer on Thursday, Mr Tillerson called the US president “pretty undisciplined” and said they didn’t share a “common value system”.
And, during a fundraising event in Houston, he added: “When the president would say, ‘Here’s what I want to do, and here’s how I want to do it,’ and I’d have to say to him, ‘Well, Mr President, I understand what you want to do but you can’t do it that way. It violates the law, it violates the treaty, you know.
“I didn’t know how to conduct my affairs with him any other way than in a very straightforward fashion.
“And I think he grew tired of me being the guy every day that told him, ‘You can’t do that, and let’s talk about what we can do.’”

Mr Tillerson served as US Secretary of State from February 1 2017 to March 31 2018.
Upon announcing Mr Tillerson’s nomination in December 2016 – before the administration had begun – Mr Trump said in a statement the former ExxonMobil CEO would be an “excellent choice” because of his “broad experience and deep understanding of geopolitics”.
However, the relationship between the two politicians has reportedly been marked by a series of difficulties and clashes.
According to a source later dismissed as false by the State Department spokeswoman, Mr Tillerson went as far as referring to the US president as a “moron” during a meeting not attended by Mr Trump on July 20.
The former Secretary of State ended his mandate at the end of March 2018, when he was abruptly fired by the US president.
Senior State Department officials said Mr Tillerson learned he lost his job by reading a tweet from Mr Trump where he thanked him “for his service”, according to NBC News.
The tweet read: “Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job!
“Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service!
“Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!”
