Mr Macron met with the prime minister, interior minister and top security service officials at the presidential palace to discuss the riots. Government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux confirmed the Macron administration was considering imposing a state of emergency. He said the president was open to dialogue but would not reverse policy reforms.
He told Europe 1 radio: “We won’t change course. We are certain of that.”
Quizzed over imposing a state of emergency, Mr Griveaux said it would be among the options considered.
But this was later denied by a source from Elysee Palace, who said the president had instead spoken about adapting security forces for future protests.
The escalating violence and public anger against Mr Macron’s economic reforms have caused the 40-year-old to lose control over his people.

Paris police said 412 people were arrested yesterday during the worst clashes in the capital for years.
