Novak Djokovic return to the top is because of this – Patrick Mouratoglou

Djokovic fell outside the top 20 in the world standings after undergoing surgery on an elbow injury earlier this year.

The Serbian took his time in returning and at the early attempts he suffered devastating losses.

Hyeon Chung shocked Djokovic at the Australian Open while Marco Cecchinato did the same at the French.

But Djokovic did not give up, rallying to win Wimbledon and following it up with his 14 Grand Slam title in the USA.

To cap off a remarkable season, Djokovic returned to the top of the world rankings as Rafael Nadal skipped the final few tournaments through injury.

And Mouratoglou, who coaches women’s legend Serena Williams, has hailed Djokovic’s comeback.

“We found the same Novak, like if he came back after a two-year break where he was elsewhere,” Mouratoglou told L’Equipe.

“We found him intact. Like before. He was extremely dominant, he is again.

“It confirms the impression we had at the time: his fall was essentially mental.

“On the court he was not himself, anger lacked, you could not recognise him.

“Since everything was there again, it does not surprise that he came back so quickly. It’s a story of personality, he is a great champion.”

After securing the year-end world No 1 trophy, Djokovic went on to lose in the ATP Finals title decider to Alexander Zverev.

The 31-year-old will still go away thrilled with his success this year which nobody could have foreseen.

And he returns to action at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship next month.
