Red Dead Redemption 2 Online map size: How big is the map? Is it bigger than single player

Red Dead Online opens up the totality of the single-player landscape to explore with others. Players can create a crew of up to seven others to collaborate with or they can choose to challenge characters to gunfights and “pitched set-piece battles”. Red Dead Online features its own full story mode, which finds you as an outlaw on the run from the law, or players can participate in missions with others.

How big is the Red Dead Redemption 2 map?

The Red Dead Redemption 2 universe is the largest Rockstar has ever devised – even more enormous than the gargantuan Grand Theft Auto V.

This scale is exacerbated because characters rely on 19th century technology, meaning they primarily travel on horse-back, as opposed to GTA V’s planes, trains and automobiles.

The vast open-world landscape spans from the bustling town of Saint Denis – based on an early New Orleans – to an coal mining territory in Appalachia.

Red Dead Redemption 2 includes most of the map from the 2010 original – covering everything north of the San Luis River.

The Red Dead Redemption 2 map is estimated to be a mind-boggling four or five times larger than the original.

And it is not only the size which has been improved.

The 2010 version has been upgraded with gorgeous graphics which give it a hyper realistic feel.

Unfortunately, much of the map will only be available once the epics story mode has been completed, meaning many players may never fully enjoy it.

What does Red Dead Online offer?

Story Missions appear on your map as the same yellow circles as in single-player Red Dead Redemption 2.

These are larger, sometimes multi-part missions that fill out the narrative of Red Dead Online.

Free Roam Missions appear as icons on your map and are the equivalent of Stranger Missions.

These relatively simple task earn and a commensurately small reward.

Free Roam Events are player-versus-player challenges.

They’re not location-based, meaning you will receive a notification in the top left of your screen and you can opt-in.

Race Series are seen your map as a checkered flag icon.

These races pit your horse against others in three kinds of stakes: Lap Races – trips around a set path, Point-to-Point – from one location to another, and Open Races.

Showdown Series appear on your map as icons with either two or three people on them, depending on the size of the teams involved.

Showdowns are the more traditional online game part of Red Dead Online, and they get their own section.
