Michael Schumacher latest: F1 legend ‘SENSES loving people around him’, archbishop reveals

Archbishop Georg Gänswein said the Formula One legend is still receiving treatment after the horror crash in 2013 but looks very similar to when he was last seen in public, only with a “fuller” face. The Catholic leader saw Schumacher in summer 2016 but has only now described the emotional visit. He told German magazine Bunte: “I sat opposite him, took hold of both hands and looked at him. His face is, as we all know, the typical Michael Schumacher face; he has become only a little fuller.”

“He senses that loving people are around him, caring for him and, thank God, keeping the overly curious public away.

“Of course, I include Michael Schumacher and his family in my prayers.”

Schumacher hit his head on a rock while skiing with his son, Mick, in the French Alps nearly five years ago.

But updates on his condition since have been few and far between and his family has been keen to maintain his privacy.

It is thought the former Ferrari ace is still receiving treatment at his home on the shore of Lake Geneva, Switzerland.

Earlier this year there was speculation the F1 superstar could be moved to a £27million mansion in Andratx, Majorca after his wife, Corinna, reportedly purchased the property.

Further fuel was thrown onto the rumours after Katia Rouarch, mayor of Andratx, told a Swiss magazine Schumacher would soon be living in the area.

But this was dismissed by Schumacher’s family who said they had no intention of moving.

And fans hoping for an update on the racing legend’s recovery were dealt a further blow this week after it emerged he had hoped to “disappear” from public life before his accident.

His manager, Sabine Kehm, told a group of media professionals in March 2016 she would fight to respect his wishes.

Her comments have only now been made public.

She said: “In general the media have never reported on Michael and Corinna’s private life.

“When he was in Switzerland, for example, it was clear he was a private individual.

“Once in a long discussion Michael said to me: ‘You don’t need to call me for the next year, I’m disappearing.’

“I think it was his secret dream to be able to do that some day.

“That’s why now I still want to protect his wishes in that I don’t let anything get out.”

Schumacher turns 50 on January 3.
