Vatican mystery: Human remains found under embassy don’t belong to missing teen girls

The discovery in October raised hopes of solving the mystery but Rome’s public prosecutor said test revealed the bones are from a male skeleton. Emanuela was last seen in June 1983, six weeks after Mirella, disappeared in May and both families believe they are linked. The remains discovered under the Holy See embassy were found by workmen renovating the property. Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See Secretary of State, said: “Things are done with greater openness and greater transparency.

“We found some remains, we wanted to know exactly what they were, to whom they belonged, and therefore asked Italy for help.”

Tests revealed the bones date back to at least 1964. A worker who dug up the remains said a team were renovating a basement floor near the Vatican’s Apostolic Nunciature.
