The quake was located 36km (22 miles) south-east of Mountain, Colombia, and at a depth of 10km.
The European earthquake monitoring agency (EMSC) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there is a possibility of tsunamis along the coast.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage caused by the earthquake so far.
Columbia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire – a huge 40,000 kilometre band where several fault lines are located, and which is associated with heightened seismic activity.
It consists of an almost constant line of oceanic trenches, volcanic arcs and belts and tectonic plate movements, in a large horseshoe shape.
