Teenage racing driver Sophia Floersch SLAMS into wall mid-air at 172mph….and SURVIVES

The 17-year-old fractured her spine after flying off the track and smashing into a media section during a Formula 3 race in Macau, China. The young German driver lost control of her car as she approached a bend, injuring four people as her racing car bulleted into a photography stand. Miraculously, Ms Floersch survived and was able to update the public on her condition shortly after the crash at the Macau Grand Prix.

She tweeted: “Just wanted to let everybody know that I am fine but will be going into surgery tomorrow morning.

“Thanks to the @fia and @hwaag_official @MercedesAMGF1 who are taking great care of me.

“Thanks to everybody for the supporting messages. Update soon.”

The Van Amersfoort Racing driver hit a rail at the Guia Circuit’s Lisboa bend, before clipping the rear of fellow driver Jehan Daruvala’s car.

Ferrari driver Guan Yu Zhou was in the car behind Ms Floersch just before the chilling accident.

Guan said: “Coming after Mandarin [the preceding right-hand kink], I saw the yellow, but I think it was just a mistake by the organisers’ station.

“Sophia was really close to Jehan, so when Jehan braked early she had no time to react.

“She hit Jehan’s right-rear, and that spun her around straight into Lisboa, and she flew into the other car. I just hope she’s OK.”

Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee said in a statement: “All were conscious during transit to the hospital and are now receiving medical treatment. Further updates will be provided as soon as possible.”

Formula One legends Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button were among well-wishers posting messages of support.

Alonso tweeted: “All my thoughts are with Sophia Floersch after the accident at Macau.

“Let’s hope to receive positive news soon. Stay strong.”
