Spain prepares for NO DEAL Brexit ‘We want ORDER’

The peninsula, a British territory since 1713 and known to its 30,000 residents as “the Rock”, is a major point of contention in Anglo-Spanish relations. Spain has long claimed sovereignty over the territory.

Spain welcomes the inclusion of a protocol on Gibraltar in the draft Brexit agreement but has not given up its claims on the British overseas territory, he added.

Mr Aguiriano told reporters the deal was “very positive” for workers and residents on Gibraltar, a peninsula on Spain’s southern coast.

Madrid hoped it be backed by the British parliament, he added, speaking as British Prime Minister Theresa May battled to save the agreement in the face of opposition from politicians across the spectrum.

He also said there was no deal yet on Gibraltar’s airport.

The Spanish government has contingency plans in place if there was no final deal on Brexit, Aguiriano added.

Mr Aguiriano’s comments came as Theresa May delivered a three hour statement to the Commons on her Brexit deal with the EU.

The Prime Minister has faced a barrage of criticism from across the chamber since publishing her draft agreement.

Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab and Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey sensationally walked out of the Government the morning after Cabinet agreed a draft EU withdrawal agreement in a stormy five-hour meeting.

Two more junior ministers – Suella Braverman at the Brexit Department and Shailesh Vara at Northern Ireland – also quit along with two parliamentary aides.
