The pressure was always on Federer’s back ever since his opening-round straight-sets defeat to Kei Nishikori.
But the Swiss star changed his approach to matches by skipping practice and it paid dividends with consecutive wins against Dominic Thiem and Anderson.
In this clash, Federer and Anderson exchanged break of serve for three consecutive games late in the first set – but it was the world No 3 who ended the run by serving for the 1-0 lead.
Anderson tried to rally at the beginning of the second but Federer showed up when it mattered the most to wrap up the win inside 76 minutes.
“I think Thiem winning maybe helped me come into this match a little more relaxed,” Federer admitted after the match.
