Pound LIVE: GBP Sterling SOARS as confident May declares Brexit talks 'in the endgame'

The defiant Prime Minister admitted talks were “immensely difficult” but stood her ground as she vowed to “not compromise on what people voted for in the referendum”.

Speaking during her annual set-piece speech to the Lord Mayor’s Banquet at the Guildhall in the City of London, Mrs May said Brexit talks had been running through the night as both sides strive to finally reach an agreement.

She said: “The negotiations for our departure are now in the endgame.

“And we are working extremely hard, through the night, to make progress on the remaining issues in the Withdrawal Agreement, which are significant.

“Both sides want to reach an agreement. But what we are negotiating is immensely difficult. I do not shy away from that.

“The Brexit talks are not about me or my personal fortunes.

“They are about the national interest – and that means making what I believe to be the right choices, not the easy ones.”

The pound rallied on the positive Brexit news, climbing to €1.48 at just before 9:00 GMT – a rise from the €1.40 seen yesterday.

While Mrs May maintained a positive stance, it is understood by the BBC that a final deal to present to cabinet is not yet ready.

The Prime Minister rubbished claims by EU chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier, who suggested a deal was good to go as early as this morning.

Claiming his comments should be taken with a “bucket of salt”, a spokesman for Mrs May said negotiations were still ongoing.

Time is slowly running out for Mrs May to seal a deal, with the UK due to leave the EU on 29 March, 2019.

The Prime Minister has a self-imposed deadline of a special summit of EU leaders at the end of November to sign off the withdrawal deal.

Mrs May is braced for fresh talks about Brexit today where it is believed a walk-out from negotiations and a future trade relationship with the EU based on World Trade Organisation rules will be discussed.

The Downing Street meeting follows a series of warnings from ministers that a deal that leaves the UK closely tied to the EU after Brexit will be inaccessible.

One minister was yesterday reported to have described the Prime Minister’s proposal for a deal as “self-harm” to the nation while another said the time had come to “walk away”.

Brexit has remained a key influencer on the pound over the last few months, with Sterling reacting to updates from negotiations.

deVere Group’s Nigel Green predicited the pound will remain volatile as EU divorce talks near a conclusion.

Mr Green said: “Sterling is all about Brexit at the moment and we can expect it to be in for a rollercoaster ride due to the increasing uncertainty as deadlines approach and the growing opposition within Theresa May’s own government.

“Nothing has already been priced in, because the possible endings are so different.

This is especially true with the Norway option once again being discussed by some Cabinet ministers, despite Mrs May having ruled it out with her red lines.”
