Mrs Obama said she wanted to follow in the footsteps of Laura Bush, her own predecessor, who offered the same support. However, she revealed to ABC that she never heard from Mrs Trump. Host Robin Roberts asked the successful lawyer if the new First Lady had “reached out”.
Mrs Obama replied: “No, she hasn’t.”
She added: “One of the things you learn as a former First Lady is don’t judge what the current is doing.
“So I’d prefer not to speak on what she’s doing versus what I did because I think every First Lady approaches this job differently.”
Mrs Trump’s spokeswoman confirmed the two had not been in correspondence.
The interview took place as Michelle Obama is promoting her memoir Becoming, released yesterday in the UK.
In the book she opened up about the struggles in her marriage to Barack Obama, miscarriage and IVF treatment.
She said her husband is still “catching his own breath” and ruled herself out of a 2020 Presidential bid.
She wrote: “I’ll say it here directly: I have no intention of running for office, ever.
“I’ve never been a fan of politics, and my experience over the last ten years has done little to change that.”
Mrs Obama also attacked President Donald Trump for being a “misogynist” and putting her family’s safety at risk by “stirring up the wingnuts and kooks”.
She said some news stories “turn her stomach” and, as her husband’s legacy is slowly unravelled, she sometimes wonders “where the bottom might be”.
However, she did not compare her role as First Lady with what Mrs Trump is doing with it.
