Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho won’t change the Red Devils for ONE reason – pundit

That’s the view of pundit Tony Cascarino, who saw United lose to city rivals Manchester City 3-1 on Sunday.

City were better all over the pitch and thoroughly outclassed Mourinho’s United at the Etihad.

It leaves the Red Devils 12 points behind Guardiola’s City, who lead the table, after just 12 games.

Guardiola has got City playing a fluent passing style which saw them win the Premier League last season.

Manchester United couldn’t cope with the accuracy and pressure that Guardiola’s style brings with City’s third goal coming after 44 successful passes.

And Cascarino believes Mourinho doesn’t have the players to replicate City’s style even if he wanted to.

“Jose Mourinho is stuck in a time warp,” Cascarino wrote in the Times.

“While Europe and the Premier League’s best sides have learnt from Guardiola and play what I’d call the football of the present, Mourinho plays football of the past, and I cannot see that it is going to change.

“To select a team as he did based on height and a physical approach is just never going to work against a team such as City, who were too quick in every way — quicker thinking, quicker moving, quicker passing.

“The previous team to have any significant success playing the way Mourinho does were Atletico Madrid, and even they have changed and adapted. Mourinho has not.

“I don’t see him changing now because he doesn’t want to and anyway he hasn’t got the players to do it.

“I don’t rate United much above a mid-table team who’ve just about got themselves out of trouble in a couple of recent games against Newcastle United and Bournemouth.

“But City’s first goal summed up the difference in approach: they had David and Bernardo Silva inside the penalty area as the attack built.

“United under Mourinho would just never be prepared to use two midfielders like that.

“City have as many as five midfield players who can score eight to 15 goals a season.”

Manchester United’s next game sees them face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on November 24 (3pm).
