Arsenal news: Unai Emery issued Gunners transfer advice after Wolves draw

That is the verdict of Alan Shearer.

The Gunners stretched their unbeaten run across all competitions to 16 games but were below par in drawing 1-1 with Wolves at the Emirates Stadium.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 86th-minute equaliser earned Arsenal a point and extended their streak after Ivan Cavaleiro had put the visitors ahead in the first half.

Arsenal have tended to start slow this season and have yet to lead a Premier League game at half time this season, with relegation candidates Cardiff the only other team to share such a record.

The north London outfit have considered considerably more goals than their close rivals having leaked 15 in 12 games so far this term.

Fourth-placed Tottenham have only conceded 10, with Chelsea on eight and Liverpool and Manchester City a mere five. Man United are the only exception, four points behind Arsenal having conceded an incredible 21 goals.

But Arsenal were also thankful to goalkeeper Bernd Leno for making several key saves against Wolves and preventing his side from slipping to a first loss since late August.

And Shearer thinks that if Unai Emery wants to maintain the improvement he has shown so far at Arsenal, they need more signings at the back.

The all-time Premier League top goalscorer told Match of the Day 2 on Emery: ”He’s definitely not afraid to change things.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’re not performing he’ll take you off and try something different.

“There’s definitely an improvement in Arsenal. We saw that last weekend [against Liverpool].

“It wasn’t one of their better performances against Wolves.

“I still they need to add to it defensively to get where they want to be but there is improvement, without a doubt.”

Emery admitted disappointment at failing to overcome Wolves, but acknowledged a point apiece was probably the fair result.

He told reporters: “We knew they are very competitive team and also organised and good on the break. In the 90 minutes tactically, it’s enough today for a win.

“For us, after, when we were drawing, we continued taking risks because we wanted to win but also conceded some chances for them.

“Then, we finished not happy with this point but we also recognised their work. I think the team played with character and we had chances to draw before our goal.

“We also continued to look for ways to create and to win the game but then we drew. In the last five or 10 minutes, we had the same idea with the risk but also thinking to win.

“At the end of the game we could say, ‘OK, the two teams both deserved it’.”
