Chelsea still need striker
Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri still needs to sign a new striker despite the recent good form of Alvaro Morata says Paul Merson.
Morata has scored in three of Chelsea’s last four league fixtures, bagging a brace in last week’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace, but has generally struggled at Stamford Bridge.
“Chelsea have a decent squad and will be there or thereabouts this season, but they still need a proper goalscorer,” Merson said.
“You only need to look at Alvaro Morata’s late chance against Palace.
“Yes, the game was won, but Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Thierry Henry, Harry Kane and the like would have sealed their hat-trick instead of trying to chip the goalkeeper, got the ball signed by everyone and then gone home!”
Juan Mata to Arsenal?
Juan Mata is reportedly set to leave Manchester United and join Arsenal on a free transfer.
Mata, who moved to Old Trafford from Chelsea in 2014, is out of contract in the summer.
He has failed to secure a regular starting spot under Jose Mourinho though he scored the equaliser against Juventus in midweek.
And talkSPORT host Adrian Durham has been told Mata will now return to London with Arsenal.
Salah pep talk
Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah is competing for the Ballon d’Or partly in thanks to a dressing-room talk four years ago.
Salah has flourished since joining the Reds last summer, scoring 44 goals in all competitions during last term.
He helped Liverpool to the Champions League final and formed a fearsome front line alongside Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.
The Egyptian has struggled to replicate that form this year though is still finding the net on regular occasions.
Salah joined Liverpool from Roma having previously failed to impress at Chelsea.
He played alongside former Barcelona star Samuel Eto’o while at Stamford Bridge and the Cameroonian has revealed details of a secret conversation between the two.
“I hope that Salah remembers the day we were together in Stamford Bridge dressing room after he’d had a poor performance,” Eto’o sports channel Al Kass.
“I asked him to be patient and told him ‘You are a good player and you will become a great player’.
“Salah has turned into that big player and will write his own story through persistence and strong desire.”
Sanchez not Mourinho’s No 1
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho reportedly wanted to sign a different player to Alexis Sanchez.
Sanchez moved to Old Trafford from Arsenal in January though has struggled to replicate his form in Manchester.
The Times claim that Mourinho has privately admitted he would have preferred the Red Devils to have signed Ivan Perisic in the summer of 2017.
The Croatian shone during the World Cup as his nation reached the final with rumours that United were after him again soon following.
Mourinho reportedly believes the Inter Milan star has better crossing ability than Sanchez and that would have been key to provide service to the likes of Romelu Lukaku.
