President Trump touched down in Paris on Friday evening ahead of a weekend of events honouring the end of the World War One. But just hours before he landed, the Republican firebrand hit out at the French leader. The US President tweeted: “President Macron of France has just suggested that Europe build its own military in order to protect itself from the US, China and Russia.
“Very insulting, but perhaps Europe should first pay its fair share of NATO, which the US subsidises greatly.”
Trump’s comments were in response to Mr Macron’s idea for the EU to have its own dedicated military, designed to defend Europe from China, Russia and the US.
Mr Macron has been a longstanding critic of Trump.
During an interview with radio station Europe 1 he said the trade bloc needed to be less reliant on the US, particularly following Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF).

Mr Macron said: “We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the US.
“When I see President Trump announcing that he’s quitting a major disarmament treaty which was formed after the 1980s Euromissile crisis that hit Europe, who is the main victim? Europe and its security.
“We will not protect the Europeans unless we decide to have a true European army.
“We need a Europe which defends itself better alone, without just depending on the US.”
A total of 60 world leaders, including President Trump, will be in Paris this week to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.
Both Trump and Mr Macron are scheduled to meet on Saturday morning at the French President’s official residence, Élysée Palace, in Paris.
The pair are expected to discuss topics including European security, Syria and Iran.
