The US President fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday, hours after he gave a press conference about the midterm elections.
Mr Sessions had recused himself from the Russia probe over the 2016 presidential race, a move that angered the President.
Following the conclusion of the midterm elections, Trump announced the man taking over the Justice Department would be Matthew Whitaker, Mr Sessions’ chief of staff.
Mr Whitaker will immediately oversee Robert Mueller’s investigation into alleged ties between Russia and the Trump campaign, taking the reins from Mr Sessions’ deputy Rod Rosenstein.
The move sparked a plan for mass protests across the US, starting at 5pm on Thursday in all time zones.

The description of the ‘Mueller protection rapid response’ plan, which managed to organise hundreds of protests, reads: “By replacing Rod Rosenstein with just-named Acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker as special counsel Robert Mueller’s boss on the investigation, Trump has undercut the independence of the investigation.
“Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and cannot be allowed to remain in charge of it.
“The Nobody Is Above the Law network demands that Whitaker immediately commit not to assume supervision of the investigation.

“Our hundreds of response events are being launched to demonstrate the public demand for action to correct this injustice.
“Trump putting himself above the law is a threat to our democracy, and we’ve got to get Congress to stop him.”
Senior Republicans also seemed opposed to the news of Mr Whitaker’s appointment and launched public warnings that Mr Mueller must be allowed to continue his investigation.
Senator Susan Collins said: “It is imperative that the Administration not impede the Mueller investigation.
“Special Counsel Mueller must be allowed to complete his work without interference”.
Mitt Romney, who won the Utah Senate race on Tuesday echoed Ms Collins’ words and wrote in a tweet: “It is imperative that the important work of the Justice Department continues, and that the Mueller investigation proceeds to its conclusion unimpeded.”
On Wednesday evening, Mr Whitaker wrote a statement about his appointment but failed to address the Mueller investigation.
The statement reads: ”It is a true honour that the President has confidence in my ability to lead the Department of Justice as Acting Attorney General.
“I am committed to leading a fair Department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans.”
