IS THAT IT? Macron’s grand plan for EU army will focus on ‘CLIMATE CRISES’ claims minister

It comes as the French President defended his manifesto in the 2019 European elections, insisting Brussels must increase efforts to build a new EU-wide army.

Mr Macron repeatedly urged the block should arm itself with a defence force to stop relying on the US and NATO on matters of security.

He cited increasing Russian animosity as the main cause of concern fuelling his demands.

However, French minister Florence Parly suggested the EU military arm could also be used for tackling the consequences of natural disasters.

She said: “What crises are we talking about?

“It is all kinds of crises.

“It may be a climate crisis – like the one that happened last year during the Irma storm on Saint Martin.

“The second type of crises is like the crisis that happened around 10 years ago in Lebanon when it was necessary to evacuate a large number of Europeans.

“When France went to the Sahel region in 2013, it did this alone.

“If a similar crisis happens in the future, we would like to have an opportunity to prepare for it together with our allies who would like to participate in this operation”

The European Commission backed Mr Macron’s plan on Tuesday, claiming it was “totally compatible” with the bloc’s goals.

However, the defence force was not positively received by many politicians.

French right-wing leader Marine Le Pen accused Mr Macron of seeking to turn Europe into an “empire”.

Mrs Le Pen, head of France’s opposition Rassemblement national party, said in an interview with Radio Classique: “Mr Macron is the defender of this new empire that is the European Union, and that crushes citizens living under its rule.

“It was empires that were at the origin of World War I, not nations.”

The creation of an EU army has been a long-term plan with the President of European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, outlining in 2017 his vision for a “permanent structured cooperation in the defence field” and claimed it was “well on the way”.

He said at the time: “By 2025 we will need a functioning European Defence Union. We need it and NATO would like us to have it.”
