PSV boss: Why THIS ’s***’ excuse can’t be made for Tottenham defeat

kept their faint hopes alive of qualifying for the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory against their Dutch opponents.

After falling behind to a towering Luuk de Jong header with just two minutes on the clock, Spurs rallied and a Harry Kane double leaves Mauricio Pochettino’s third in Group B, three points behind Inter Milan, who drew 1-1 against Barcelona at the San Siro on Tuesday.

As far as Wembley is concerned, the pitch was heavily criticised and the NFL markings were clearly visible once again.

Van Bommel was far from impressed with the state of the surface.

However, he stopped short of blaming the pitch for his side’s inability to close out the game.

“It’s s***, so. You know what I mean, it’s bad,” Van Bommel said.

“In Holland we say s*** a little bit quicker than in English.

“It’s not good, but we are not complaining.

“Before we were training on it, and I told the guys after one minute you have to stop and get on with training, get used to the pitch.

“Of course, everyone wants the good pitch, but it is not so good, and you have to deal with it.”

Although Spurs had to do things the hard way, Pochettino was delighted with the performance of his players.

He said: “The team deserved the victory. We won and suffered a lot.

“It was a massive effort so I was pleased. We played a lot in eight days.

“Now we need to try to recover for Saturday [at Crystal Palace].

“The team is growing up. We have the character of never giving up, which is so important.”

Spurs return to Premier League action away to Crystal Palace on Saturday (5.30pm).
