Chelsea have ONE major advantage over Liverpool this season – Blues hero

That’s the view of former Chelsea ace Pat Nevin, who has seen the Blues record an unbeaten start to the season.

They have done so even though Maurizio Sarri has rotated the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Ross Barkley, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield.

Chelsea face the tricky task of the Europa League this season leading to an unenviable schedule for at least the first half of the season.

Liverpool made a number of summer signings, improving their strength in depth, though travel to Serbia for a Champions League clash with Red Star Belgrade this week without Xherdan Shaqiri.

And Nevin believes the absence of the Swiss international shows the difference in squad sizes between the sides.

“What is noticeable is that with Xherdan Shaqiri not travelling, suddenly Liverpool look to have a much more sparse squad than I had thought,” Nevin wrote in his column for Chelsea’s official website.

“If you consider how many changes they can afford to make in their European tie compared with how many Chelsea will make in a couple of days it really is an eye-opener.

“Of course the circumstances and the competition will have an effect, but the size and quality of our squad is the envy of everyone right now, other than Manchester City of course.

“It means that so far even though the manager isn’t rotating that much in the Premier League there is no real concern about burn out yet.

“This is a problem for others, particularly in a post-World Cup season.

“Recently I watched Luka Modric and tonight I will once again view Roberto Firmino and you can see they are affected with the games they have played.

“The likes of Eden, though injured last week, still looks fresh because we have been able to rest him quite a few times already.”

Chelsea continue their Europa League campaign by taking on BATE Borisov on Thursday (5.55pm).

Alvaro Morata may start having discovered some form over recent weeks.

And the Spaniard has spoken out on Chelsea’s aims this season.

“At the end of the season, if we want to fight for the Premier League, I need to score many goals, Eden [Hazard] has to score many goals, the other strikers, Willian, Pedro, [Ross] Barkley,” Morata said.

“There is Hazard, there is [Sadio] Mane, [Roberto] Firmino, [Sergio] Aguero, [Harry] Kane.

“This is the league with the best strikers in the world. I don’t need to think about scoring more goals than other players.”
