What are the midterm elections?
Midterm elections are the chance for voters to choose their candidates for the US Congress, governorships and local elections.
These particular elections often result in the President’s party losing seats.
The Republican Party currently holds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The House of Representatives is the lower chamber of Congress, while the Senate is the upper chamber.
However, the two chambers are very different.
House of Representative members will only stand in a part of their state, otherwise known as a Congressional District.
Smaller states like Delaware and Vermont will only have one representative, but bigger states such as California will have 53 representatives.
Representatives serve two year terms and stand for relation every even year.
Meanwhile, Senators represent the whole state.
They also serve six-year terms, with elections being held over even years.
This means only a third of the Senate will be up for reelection during any elections.
