Google Maps beaten by its long-time rival? New images show shocking differences in detail

Google Maps is hugely popular and harnessed by users across the globe.

The software is renowned for its futuristic functions such as Street View that offer incredibly detailed glimpses into different areas.

Google Maps is regularly updated by the American tech giant, meaning new features are always arriving.

But the software has been rivalled by Apple Maps since its release with iOS 7 back in 2013.

Since its debut, Apple has been working to improve the application and radically challenge Google Maps.

vCard QR Code

vCard.red is a free platform for creating a mobile-friendly digital business cards. You can easily create a vCard and generate a QR code for it, allowing others to scan and save your contact details instantly.

The platform allows you to display contact information, social media links, services, and products all in one shareable link. Optional features include appointment scheduling, WhatsApp-based storefronts, media galleries, and custom design options.

Earlier this year TechCrunch reported Apple was “re-building” the service using its own data for the first time.

Apple Senior Vice President, Eddy Cue, spoke with the publication and insisted the Cupertino-based firm was determined to bring its app “to the next level”.

Cue explained: “Since we introduced this six years ago — we won’t rehash all the issues we’ve had when we introduced it — we’ve done a huge investment in getting the map up to par.

“When we launched, a lot of it was all about directions and getting to a certain place. Finding the place and getting directions to that place. We’ve done a huge investment of making millions of changes, adding millions of locations, updating the map and changing the map more frequently. All of those things over the past six years.

“We wanted to take this to the next level.

“We have been working on trying to create what we hope is going to be the best map app in the world, taking it to the next step. That is building all of our own map data from the ground up.”

With the release of iOS 12 back in September, the newest version of Apple Maps made its public debut.

However, it is worth noting the new look is only present in “Northern California”, but Apple has declared it will “come soon” to the rest of the US.

But in an analysis of the new version, Justin O’Beirne, a cartography blogger, detailed the sheer difference in vegetation present.

Displaying the old and new iterations of Apple Maps side-by-side, the improved levels of detail were shown across a number of towns and cities in California.

O’Beirne also noted the new version of Apple Maps also displays clear differences for beach terrain and highlights points such as car parks and racetracks.

The blogger also noted the stark difference between certain areas in Google Maps and Apple Maps.

Apple Maps was shown displaying much greater vegetation detail while Google Maps looked “empty in comparison”, O’Beirne said.

He added: “And all of these details create the impression that Apple hasn’t just closed the gap with Google—but has, in many ways, exceeded it.

“But only within the 3.1 percent of the US where the new map is currently live.”

Although Apple Maps was praised for its vegetation detail, the software was shown to inaccurately represent the height of some buildings in San Francisco.

While Apple has declared the new version of its map service will come to the rest of the US “soon”, it is unconfirmed when other areas of the world will receive it.
