Liverpool news: Arsenal hero Jens Lehmann sends Alisson dig before Gunners clash

The Brazilian shot-stopper joined from Roma for a then-world record £67million fee in July as Liverpool sought to solve a long-time problem position.

And he has enjoyed an excellent start at Anfield – one error in a win at Leicester aside – in keeping six clean sheets in 10 Premier League matches with Liverpool unbeaten in the league as of yet.

The 26-year-old’s influence has been a key factor in the defensive resilience of Jurgen Klopp’s title chasers with just four goals conceded in their 10 league outings.

But Arsenal legend Jens Lehmann isn’t so convinced by the Merseysiders’ new No 1 due to the lack of minutes he has at the top level in comparison to other established keepers.

And he thinks it will take more time to assess just what bracket Alisson ranks into in terms of keepers across Europe, having played only a combined 90 league games in his career for Internacional, Roma and Liverpool until now.

“With Alisson for example I was surprised because he played 100 games in five or six years and 50, all of them last season [with Roma],” Germany icon Lehmann told Premier League Today on BeIN SPORTS.

“So you’re asking yourself, ‘Where has he been before?’

“All of a sudden he’s turning up for Liverpool and he’s supposed to be a great asset. So it’s interesting to watch that.”

Yet despite his doubts over Alisson, Lehmann – who won the Premier League with the Gunners in 2003-04 – thinks this Liverpool team are capable of ending the club’s lengthy wait for a league crown.

“It’s a great team. Can they win the league? Yes, definitely,” he added.

“The Champions League campaign last season gave them a lot of confidence and now you see players like [Joe] Gomez and [Trent] Alexander-Arnold, very young [but] performing on the highest level.

“If I look at this team, for me the weakest if you can say so or probably the less strongest part in their team is the midfield.

“So you try to expose them there but it’s difficult because they have pace and they have everything you need to become champion.”

Alisson, meanwhile, has told Liverpool’s official club website that they travel to the Emirates Stadium with only three points mind despite Arsenal being 13 games unbeaten across all competitions.

“It’s definitely going to be a great game and we shouldn’t fear anybody,” he said. “We’re confident in our quality.

“We appreciate the quality of the opposition but we can’t show any fear on the pitch, we need to be brave, we need to do our best to play our best football and play the way Klopp wants us to on the pitch. It’ll definitely be a great contest.

“A team with intentions of winning the Premier League needs to be winning this type of game so we’re going there with victory in mind while keeping our feet on the ground and knowing we’ll need to give sweat, blood and tears to win the game.”
