Arsenal news: Lucas Torreira issued ‘big’ Liverpool warning by Jens Lehmann

The Uruguayan has been widely hailed for his impressive form since joining from Sampdoria for £26.4million in the summer.

Torreira has become a key part of Unai Emery’s starting line-up since initially being eased into life in England.

And the 22-year-old’s performances have been key in the Gunners’ 13-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Torreira has been praised for the tenacity and aggression he adds to Arsenal’s midfield, with the north London outfit long accused for lacking strength and steel in previous years.

Yet former Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann thinks Torreira will face the hardest 90 minutes of his Premier League career against title contenders Liverpool this evening.

The Reds – unbeaten in 10 top-flight games so far – will be looking to get in behind an Arsenal back-line that has looked vulnerable despite their recent run with Mohamed Salah having scored in all of his last three matches.

And Lehmann is also hopeful Emery will avoid playing Granit Xhaka at left-back with the Swiss defensive midfielder having filled in for the injured Nacho Monreal there against Crystal Palace a week ago.

Lehmann told the Premier League Today show: “Yeah so far he looks like [he’s the answer to Arsenal’s midfielder problems], in challenges that have been not as big as he’s facing on Saturday.

“I don’t know about that – Xhaka at left back. That’s obviously where you can expose him.

“I don’t think they will turn up like that against Liverpool.”

Emery’s side had won seven consecutive league games before drawing against Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend – with their fine run of form propelling them up the table.

They trail Liverpool – second to Manchester City only on goal difference – by four points with their hopes of Champions League qualification a popular topic.

Arsenal have missed out on the top four in both of the last two seasons and had previously been written off earlier this year given they were starting fresh under a new manager after Arsene Wenger had been in charge for 22 years.

And on the differences of Emery’s tenure so far, Lehmann believes the north London club are less attack-minded.

He continued: “I think it’s a more defensive approach. What is not shown is how many goals they’ve conceded already, that probably separates them a little from the top three.

“They’ve conceded quite a lot of goals which shows you the balance is not as good as for the teams above them and they need to work at that.

“They need to work on that to challenge for the title.”
