Golden State Warriors can only be defended with this system, insists Mike D’Antoni

The Warriors are currently on a six-game winning streak and are top of the Western Conference, with an 8-1 record.

D’Antoni is adamant that players have to switch when facing them, otherwise the likes of Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson will punish you.

“There are only certain ways you can guard an offence,” D’Antoni said.

“The only way you can guard Golden State is the switch.

“I’ve seen it a thousand times.

“You cannot guard them, if you don’t switch.”

D’Antoni, who is a two-time NBA coach of the year, concedes that even if you do adopt the switching tactic it doesn’t guarantee a stop.

“Its doesn’t mean you can guard them switching either,” he said on the podcast, The Lowe Post.

“But at least you have a chance, and thats all you want is a chance.”

D’Antoni feels the Warriors have so much quality within their roster that you can’t rely on a defender having to come around the pick.

“It’s because they’re so good and players have gotten so good that any kind of — you start chasing them, they come off picks.

“I don’t think it’s humanly possible for me to get around the pick in time that Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and company, Kevin Durant, can get a shot altered,” D’Antoni said.

“It’s not there. So, now what can you do?

“You can anticipate that you have to switch because if you’re a split second late, they’re knocking it down.”

The Warriors next opponents are the Minnesota Timberwolves and .

“Sometimes, you don’t get to call a play for Durant and, you know, he’ll magically end up with 25, 30 points just because of his sheer talent and ability and his IQ,” Curry said.

“And by saying that, once again, he doesn’t just wake up, and, you know, that happens – he puts the time and work in.”

As for the Rocket they have suffered a dreadful start to this season, as the go into their next game against the Brooklyn Nets , with a 1-5 record.

They have been without James Harden, the current NBA MVP, for the last two games due to an injury but he is .

“I do think when James Harden comes back and we have a full roster things will be better,” D’Antoni said.

“Our goal, like the other 30 teams, is to win the championship and we are not even near that

“We are just trying to figure it out.

“But you worry about the things that you can change and try not to worry about the things you can’t.”
