Arsenal news: Jens Lehmann reveals surprise Unai Emery disappointment before Liverpool

That’s the surprise claim from Jens Lehmann.

The Gunners face Liverpool in a highly-anticipated Premier League showdown at the Emirates Stadium this evening (5.30pm).

And the main question of the pre-match build-up is whether Arsenal can build on their 13-match unbeaten streak in all competitions by proving themselves against higher class opposition.

After losing their first two matches of the campaign to Manchester City and Chelsea, Emery’s men embarked on an 11-game winning streak only halted by Crystal Palace last weekend.

But they got back to winning ways as a second-string side beat Blackpool in the Carabao Cup in mid-week.

Emery has clearly injected confidence into his charges with the north London outfit playing some stunning football of late, with Arsenal – written off for Champions League qualification this term in late August – now even mentioned as possible dark horses in the title race.

They welcome a Liverpool team yet to lose in the league and level on points with favourites City having been tipped as their closest contenders before the start of the campaign.

And former goalkeeper Lehmann is intrigued to see how Arsenal perform because of the challenge Liverpool will pose – particularly with the dangers of their front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.”But we are in a process. I want to make a big history.”

Yet despite their apparent progress, Lehmann does not think his old club are ahead of schedule under their new manager because he says their ambition after sacking Arsene Wenger was to immediately get back to the summit of the English top flight.

He told Premier League Today: “No, actually I regret it obviously that Arsene is not there anymore but after 22 years you cannot say, ‘You can’t do that!’

“Because after a while, some refreshment is not that bad.

“But they did that to become champions again this season.

“They’re on a good way now but this game against Liverpool is now the third actual challenge after they’ve lost to City and Chelsea.

“So it’s going to be exciting how they turn up there.”

Arsenal have not won a title since 2003-04 but have not even made the Champions League in the last two seasons – leading to Wenger’s sacking.

Much of their undoing has to do with their poor record against their big six opponents – Arsenal winning just one of 10 games against Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham last term.

But Emery has challenged his team to correct their record against their rivals.

He said: “We want to write a new history. Our new history is with the present and also with our players and with our quality.

“I believe in our players and this project and we are starting this project very positively and in our mentality.

“We need to improve but each match gives us a lot of information on how we develop and I trust in our players.

“Liverpool is a big test to improve more things and we can show every supporter our mentality and performance against a very big team.
