US midterm elections: Donald Trump supporters AFRAID to speak out claims BBC presenter

Ms Maitlis appeared on the late night political show to report on the US midterm elections in Virginia, as the race appears to be one of the most closely watched congressional elections in the US.

Recent polls show the results of November’s elections could turn the state increasingly blue, but according to Emily Maitlis’ report polls could be highly inaccurate due to an increasing number of Republican supporters afraid to “speak up”.

According to Ms Maitlis: “Shy Trump fans might not sound like a likely demographic, but in well-heeled, well educated parts of the country they could emerge as the pivotal one”.

The Newsnight journalist spoke to Virginia citizens and at a football game she asked a couple if they knew which way they were voting.

The woman promptly replied “absolutely” but when asked if she could reveal who she would vote for, she added: “No, it is top secret.”

Her partner explained: “That is what you get here, Republican supporters are afraid to speak up so polls are inaccurate.

“We are definitely voting Republican, we believe in the progress this country has made.”

The woman continued: “The majority of the women that I know that are Republicans don’t speak out.

“They just keep quiet and vote the way we always vote.”

Diana, another woman from Virginia, told the Newsnight reporter she is voting for the party which promotes “equal rights to people”.

Surprisingly for Ms Maitlis, Diana was referring to the Republicans.

She explained the reason: “I like the top man right now is saying what he thinks and he sticking to it.

“He ’s doing well for our country.”

Ms Maitlis noted: “She’s talking about Trump.

“She just doesn’t say his name.”

US voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, November 6, which will decide who will take the majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
