Mr Sanders was supporting fellow Democrat Andrew Gillum’s campaign to become governor of Florida, a key swing state and electoral battleground.
Mr Gillum is currently polling neck and neck with Republican rival Ron DeSantis, a close ally of President Trump.
During the rally Mr Sanders described health care as a “human right”, demanded action to tackle climate change and called for a $15 per hour minimum wage.
He delivered a similar speech at the University of Central Florida (UCF), in Orlando, on the same day.
At the UCF rally he claimed: “The reason Trump will be here is he is nervous because his candidate might lose.
“And your job is to make Trump very very nervous.”
Whilst Mr Sanders lost the Florida 2016 Democratic presidential primary to Hillary Clinton by 64 to 33 percent he retains a significant campus following.
Thus far at the University of South Florida 1,385 registered Democrats have voted, as opposed to 299 Republicans and 526 who are unaligned.
President Trump also attended a Florida rally last night, with his supporters gathering in the southern town of Estero.
The President described the upcoming election as a choice between “greatness and gridlock”.
He added: “The Democrats are going absolutely crazy folks.”
