While being interviewed for Recode by Kara Swisher, the interviewer got two US congressmen confused.
When asked what she thought of Cory Booker saying that “we kick them in the shins” about how Democrats should respond to Republican election tactics, the former secretary of state corrected Ms Swisher by saying that it was Eric Holder.
Ms Swisher apologised and corrected herself only to have Mrs Clinton respond with what appeared to be a racist comment.
Mrs Clinton said: “Yeah. I know they all look alike.”
Ms Swisher was quick to respond by saying “No they don’t”, why the audience let out a gasp.
Mrs Clinton then stated jokingly: “I was paid by Mark Zuckerberg to do that.”
The two quickly moved on to the subject of Trump’s tweets.
They did not discuss the comments again during the interview.
The comments caused anger on social media, with one Twitter user saying: “I could not imagine the reaction if Trump said this.”
Another added: “I’ve given up on her just as much as Trump.”
However, other users defended the former Presidential hopeful.
One social media user said: “I really wish people would stop taking words out of context.
“We are never going to be okay with all of this raciism, thinking people are saying something when they aren’t and those who are saying something bad.
“Some are okay with it.”
One person wrote a tweet that appeared to defend the former presidential candidate: “I get she was joking but if Trump said that – there’d be a riot.”
Another was looking to 2020 for the presidential election: “I still don’t like her. “And I pray she doesn’t run and run again.”
