But an otherwise poor race failed to detract from Hamilton’s achievement, drawing level with Juan Manuel Fangio on five world titles.
The Briton battled with his tyres throughout the race while Max Verstappen stormed to glory.
Verstappen may have taken the chequered flag, but the day in Mexico belongs to Hamilton once again.

After the race, Hamilton couldn’t stop bouncing around in front of the baying crowd as the excitement got the better of him.
Sky Sports’ David Coulthard managed to grab the 33-year-old for a quick word on how he felt about the achievement.
And Hamilton admitted to being “humbled” by the moment while taking a moment to send a heartfelt message to his dad.
“It’s a very strange feeling right now,” Hamilton said.
“It wasn’t won here, it was won through a lot of hard work through many races.
“I’ve been with Mercedes since I was 13 so to complete this – Fangio had done it with Mercedes – it’s an incredible feeling and very surreal at the moment.
“It was a horrible race.
“I got a great start and was working my way up but then I really don’t know what happened after that.
“I was just trying to hold on and bring the car home.
“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for my family, and for all the hard work my Dad did. It’s a very humbling experience.”
