Hurricane Willa: How many more hurricanes will there be this year?

The 2018 Atlantic Hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30.

Areas usually affected each year are the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

A hurricane is defined as a “tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph (64 knots) or higher”, according to the National Weather Service.

Hurricane names are chosen from six rotating lists created by the National Hurricane Center, which are then updated by the World Meteorological Organisation.

If there are any more hurricanes this year, they could be called Oscar, Patty, Tony or Valerie.

Storm names are retired only when those storms are particularly deadly and costly.

Some of the strongest hurricanes this year have included Michael, which killed more than 32 people across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia earlier in October.

Hurricane Willa was the third – and latest- Category 5 hurricane of the 2018 season.

However, no deaths have been reported.

How many more hurricanes will there be this year?

Hurricanes form over warm ocean waters near the equator, as they thrive off warm, moist air.

This air rises upward from near the surface over the ocean.

Because this air moves up and away from the surface, there is less air left near the surface.

As the warm air continues to rise, the surrounding air swirls in to take its place.

As the warmed, moist air rises and cools off, the water in the air forms clouds and then grows, as it is fed by the ocean’s heat and water evaporating from the surface.

Mark Bourassa, Professor of Meteorology at Florida State University, revealed it is difficult to predict how more many hurricanes could form by the end of the season.

He told Express.co.uk: “Until hurricanes form it is really hard to guess where they would hit.

“We can make some guesses, but they cover large enough areas that they are not effective.

“Responding to such guesses would be a huge economic burden and would result in most people ignoring the forecasts.”

However Dmitry Dukhovskoy, who is a research scientist at the same university, warned another hurricane could be on its way before the 2018 season ends next month.

He said to Express.co.uk: “Officially, hurricane season ends on November 30.

“Given anomalously warm autumn this year and warmer than usual Gulf of Mexico, it would not be surprising if another hurricane develops over the gulf.”
