Jim Beach, who still manages individual band members, said: “We have found a cast which is to die for. They have always been over the top, and when the suggestion came to do Wembley Arena it just seemed obvious. All four of them are at the top of the tree when it comes to performance.”

Malek, 37, who plays Freddie Mercury, said: “With the weight of it all, obviously, of trying to portray one of the greatest icons of any field, it’s a massive task.

Unique “So I dove right in – singing classes, I worked on the dialect, piano, and then I did choreography slash movement for almost three or four hours a day, every day.

“And it proved to be very useful. I mean, he’s so unique – not only a human being, but his physicality, his mannerisms, the way he speaks, the way he holds himself. It all required quite a bit of work, but I enjoyed every second of it.”

Farrokh Bulsara, born in 1946 to Parsi parents in Zanzibar – now Tanzania – fled to England with his family at 17 during the violence of the 1964 revolution.

Malek’s parents, Coptic Christians, fled to the US from Egypt seeking a better life.

When first approached by producers for the role, Malek told them: “I’m not a singer. I don’t play piano. I’m not a dancer… And I’m not British.
