Monkey gang kill man, 72, with bricks in shocking attack

Dharampal Singh, 72, was gathering pieces of dry wood for havan in Tikri, Uttar Pradesh, when the troop of monkeys threw more than 20 bricks, striking him in the head and chest.

Mr Singh later died in hospital.

It is thought the monkeys had taken the bricks from a nearby dilapidated building before climbing a tree and attacking Mr Singh.

The incident was the latest in a string of violent behaviour from monkeys which has led Mr Singh’s fellow villagers in the north Indian state, which is home to the Taj Mahal, to complain to police.

However, the monkeys are a protected species meaning authorities have limited options to control their aggression.

Mr Singh’s brother, Krishnapal, told the Times of India: “Monkeys threw more than 20 bricks at Dharampal on Thursday.

“He was hit on the head, chest and legs.

“Thrown from quite a height, the bricks were enough to kill him.

“These rogue monkeys are the real culprits and must pay for it.

“We have given a written complaint against monkeys but police don’t seem to be convinced enough.”

Mr Singh’s family have lodged a formal complaint with Indian police who have recorded the death as an accident.

Chitwan Singh, station officer of Doghat police station, told the newspaper: “How can we register against monkeys?

“This will make us a laughing stock.

“I don’t think it is a logical demand.

“We were definitely informed of the bizarre accident and we registered it in our case diary after which a post-mortem was also conducted.”

The newspaper also reported that deadly attacks carried out by monkeys have been rising throughout the country.

According to wildlife experts, the most common species for the attacks are rhesus macaques however it is not known which breed attacked Mr Singh.
