Elon Musk “buys” Fortnite: Twitter talk takes in Epic Games and SpaceX founder

For those Fortnite fans that missed it, you might be wondering why people are talking about Elon Musk buying Fortnite.

It’s a joke that started on Twitter after the SpaceX founder retweeted a joke image, referring to him buying the company.

The online mock-up states that Elon Musk bought Fortnite and then deleted it, with the tech billionaire adding: “Had to been done ur welcome.” (SIC)

This set off a wave of comments, one from Epic Games themselves, who retweeted an article on SpaceX’s predictions for a mars base.

This will apparently happen before the end of the next decade, with the official SpaceX site stating: “Our aspirational goal is to send our first cargo mission to Mars in 2022.

“The objectives for the first mission will be to confirm water resources, identify hazards, and put in place initial power, mining, and life support infrastructure.

“A second mission, with both cargo and crew, is targeted for 2024, with primary objectives of building a propellant depot and preparing for future crew flights.

“The ships from these initial missions will also serve as the beginnings of the first Mars base, from which we can build a thriving city and eventually a self-sustaining civilization on Mars.”

Epic Games reposted the article with the caption: “A whole decade, @elonmusk? Just build, LOL!”

This is in reference to a Fortnite joke, where players ask for advice on the best way is to get better at the game.

This led to Musk adding a further comment to the Twitter discussion, adding: “Reality is hard.”

This set off a whole discussion on Reddit about adding a new Flamethrower weapon to Fortnite, in the guise of Musk’s Boring design.

“Flamethrowers would be cool, plus additional damage against wood structures would increase the value of brick and metal which otherwise aren’t usually very good,” one user explains

Another adds: “That’s true. It would be a very interesting game mechanic.”

“I feel like it could work quite well, with the right balancing? Maybe do damage through walls like stinks so to flush out turtle players but having very limited range.”

“Yeah! A ‘gun’ that does little but steady damage and perhaps destroys builds a like a minigun speed or even quicker. It would really be effective at stopping players that love to turtle.”
