Anthony Davis: Pelicans star makes James Harden MVP claim after NBA win over Rockets

The Pelicans were in fabulous form and romped to a 131-112 victory on the road last night.

Davis missed out on a triple double, but still made a weighty contribution to the triumph with 32 points, 16 rebounds and a career-best eight assists.

Reigning MVP James Harden wasn’t as effective for the Rockets, but still scored 18 points, with nine rebounds and 10 assists to boot.

But when asked what it meant to outscore Harden, Davis was rather modest.

“I’m taking what the defence gives me,” Davis said.

“I’m just going to go out there and have fun.

“That’s all I do and the other stuff will come later.

“It’s only Game 1, so we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

When asked for his thoughts more generally about the performance, Davis added: “Tonight we did a great job in imposing our will on the defense end.

“We made the most of our opportunities.

“We took the rebounds when they came.

“If we continue to play like this, we will be tough to beat.”

Elsewhere, the Toronto Raptors beat last year’s NBA Finals losers Cleveland Cavaliers 116-104.
