Google pulls out of Saudi business conference in wake of Khashoggi disappearance

Google became the latest in a growing list of leading businesses that have publicly stated they will not be attending Saudi Arabia’s annual business summit.

The Future Investment Initiative Summit is scheduled to be held on October 23, but there is speculation that it may need to be cancelled.

Google said in a statement on Monday that Google Cloud chief executive Diane Greene will not be attending the event.

While neither the chief executive nor a spokesman has given a reason why she will not be attending, it is believed the alleged Saudi involvement in the disappearance of Mr Khashoggi is to blame.

Many other big names in business have also announced they will not be attending.

Uber’s chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said he will not be attending the event in Riyadh due to his concern over Mr Khashoggi’s unknown fate.

Earlier this year, Google announced they would be working with Saudi Arabia to open five innovation hubs in the country in order to train aspiring technologists.

The summit was launched last year and there were 150 speakers from 140 organisations registered to take part in the second annual event.

Mr Khashoggi disappeared after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain paperwork confirming that he was divorced.

He was planning on marrying his fiancé, Hatice Cengiz, a 36-year-old PhD student, who he met in Turkey.

Turkish investigators believe the journalist was killed and dismembered in the embassy by 15 Saudis, who arrived in the country and left the same day.

One of them also brought a bone saw with them and others purchased extra luggage from the duty-free store, according to Turkish officials.

Saudi Arabia has continually denied being involved in Mr Khashoggi’s disappearance and has said they will assist in a joint investigation into the disappearance.

It is believed Saudi Arabia will announce that the journalist was killed by mistake.

US President Donald Trump suggested Mr Khashoggi may have been killed by “rogue killers” following a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
