Earthquakes today: MASSIVE magnitude 5 quakes hit Alaska and Russia

Russia and the USA have been under a spell of dangerous high-magnitude activity today, as populous mainland areas were hit by tremors.

The rest of the Ring of Fire has also been graced with pockets of fresh earthquake activity, particularly in the mainland United States.

More than 20 small tremors have taken place in the area today, ranging from magnitude 2.0 to magnitude 6.0.

Indonesia, still recovering from the deadly Sulawesi earthquake, has also been struck by tremors.

A massive 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit Alaska today – and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) has said there is a chance up to 10 people could die.

The USGS set out a 69 percent chance of at least one person dying and a 65 percent chance of £760,000 ($1 million) in damages.

A much lower but still present 29 percent chance exists of 10 people dying and a 30 percent chance of up to £7.6 million ($10 million) damages.

The survey says most buildings in the region are resistant to earthquake activity, although a small number of vulnerable properties bring up the chances of injury.

In the central US states, there was activity in Oklahoma and California, normally hotbeds if seismic activity.

Oklahoma saw a minor 2.6 magnitude earthquake touch down near Guthrie, with no serious side effects.

California’s 2.6 and 2.9 magnitude tremors were fairly inconsequential as well, not raising any red flags for the state.

Earthquakes in Russia

Across the Pacific, Russia has been also been at the mercy of strong activity, with a magnitude 5.6 magnitude earthquake near Yelizovo.

The USGS has placed chances of at least one person dying and up to £760,000 ($1 million) of damage being caused at 65 percent.

There is also a 30 percent chance up too 10 people could die, and a 4 percent chance 100 people could die.

Heightened chances are related to the predominant building types in the area, which are “adobe block and unreinforced brick with mud construction”, which may not be as resistant to earthquakes.

Earthquakes in Indonesia

Still recovering from multiple severe tremors and a tsunami, there were also two earthquake detected in Indonesia today.

Both were in the magnitude 4 range, with a magnitude 4.7 near Saparua and a magnitude 4.3 near Kota Ternate.

While the earthquakes were both medium-range, they took place at a depth of 200km and 51km below the sea.

Depths like this mean the tremors didn’t reach the surface, and were unable to cause any damage to nearby settlements.
