John Cena addresses WWE retirement rumours and reveals reason why he wrestles part-time

Cena has been working on a part-time basis with Vince McMahon’s promotion these past few years due to his busy Hollywood schedule and his advanced age of 41 years old.

Recent rumours suggest that he is set to retire from professional wrestling but The Champ states that his career is not over yet.

However, the 16-time world champion points out that he can no longer meet the same demands as he wants to make sure he stays healthy for the rest of his life.

The Leader of the Cenation described the WWE schedule as a “young man’s game” and revealed that nowadays he has to work out for almost an hour in the morning just to attend a full day of interviews.

Cena told Sports Illustrated’s SI Media podcast: “I’m in the best shape of my life but now […] as a 41-year-old man especially someone who’s had his attitude change about a lot of things in life one of those things is, how am I gonna get around when I’m 70 [years old]? How am I gonna get around when I’m 80?

“I can’t look at 41 being like, ‘Well I’m lucky if I make it past this year’.

“I’m trying to do the best I can to live as healthy as I can and I know for a fact a full-time WWE schedule is a young man’s game.

“It would just be the amount of hours in the day [that would take the biggest toll out of me].

“So, to give you an example, at 26 or 32 [years old] I could literally just show up and go.

“And now I have to wake up every morning and break a sweat for 20 minutes and then stretch for 35 minutes to get through a day of sitting down and doing interviews.

“So repeat that process on a day of a performance, then go work out, then go do it before a match and then go cool down after a match and then add all the logistics into everything…

“It’s not that I can’t go, I think the quote is, ‘I’m not as good as I once was but I’m as good once as I ever was’.

“That’s why all the elder statesmen, as we say, can come back and perform at a high level once or twice or a few times.

“And I think that’s where I fit best now because the days aren’t long enough for me to do it five days a week.

“When I was younger it was easy. You show up, you perform, you move to the next one because you’re bullet proof.

“I’ve had a wonderful career and my career is not over. It’s changing, it’s evolving. But my main concern now is my overall long-term health.”
