It was the McGregor’s first appearance inside the Octagon for nearly two years following his adventure into the boxing world.
He picked up a reported $100million from his fight with Floyd Mayweather and claimed he was in line to earn around half of that for his clash with Khabib.
Ahead of UFC 229, McGregor said: “It’s a tasty, tasty, record-breaking deal. It’s give or take [nine figures]. The Mayweather fight was nine figures but we’re almost there, it’s a good, solid eight figures; halfway there.”
McGregor has called for a rematch, issuing a statement on social media: “Good knock. Looking forward to the rematch.”
The Irishman had not stepped foot inside the Octagon for almost two years heading into this bout – and there is speculation he may retire.
Khabib’s win was soured by the events that took place following his victory.
Despite retaining his UFC lightweight title, the Russian appeared angry in the aftermath of the fight. The 30-year-old tossed his mouthguard, vaulted over the cage into the crowd and began brawling with a member of McGregor’s team.
UFC president Dana White admits the post-fight brawl was not good for the image of the sport: “I saw one of Conor’s guys yelling at Khabib, Khabib ran and jumped over the octagon, went after him. Two of Khabib’s guys got into the octagon, one guy hit Conor with some shots from behind, and that’s it
“The Nevada State Athletic Commission pulled the footage from us, there’s an investigation going on. They are withholding Khabib’s purse, they are not withholding Conor’s.
“The way that works is Conor is one of the guys who was attacked. Conor refused to press charges.”
