Cristiano Ronaldo: Juventus issue statement on rape allegations

Ronaldo, 33, has been accused of rape by former nightclub worker Kathryn Mayorga. He denies the claims.

The forward moved from Real Madrid to Juventus in the summer.

And his new club has now made a statement regarding Ms Mayorga’s allegations.

“Cristiano Ronaldo has shown in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus,” the club Twitter account posted.

“The events allegedly dating back to almost 10 years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by anyone who has come into contact with this great champion.”

Ms Mayorga, born in Nevada, says the alleged incident happened in 2009, the night after Manchester United accepted a bid from Real Madrid for the Portuguese.

The eventual move, costing £80m, made Ronaldo the most expensive player in the world at the time.

Ms Mayorga claims that the alleged incident happened after Ronaldo introduced himself to her in the VIP section of Vegas nightclub Rain.

After allegedly giving her his number, Ms Mayorga says Ronaldo invited her and her friend back to his penthouse at the Palms Place Hotel.

While changing into clothes to go in his Jacuzzi, Ms Mayorga claims that Ronaldo walked in and asked her to perform sexual acts.

She then says, despite her refusal, that Ronaldo forced himself upon her and committed rape.

Since making the allegation, Ms Mayorga has gone into hiding.

Her lawyer, Leslie Stovall, said yesterday: “She has decided not to make herself available to the media and stay out of the public because of her emotional state. It is not pleasant for her.”

Ronaldo posted his denial on Twitter, saying: “I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.

“Keen as I may be to clear my name, I refuse to feed the media spectacle created by people seeking to promote themselves at my expense.

“My clear conscious will thereby allow me to await with tranquillity the results of any and all investigations.”

Despite that, global sports brand Nike, who sponsor Ronaldo, have revealed their worry at the allegations.

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” they told AP.
