2UP Rose/Rahm vs Koepka/Finau (8)

09:24: FIST PUMP! That’s the first ‘proper’ Tim Henman-esque one of the Ryder Cup and it comes from Rahm. He’s left with a 15-footer for the birdie and rattles it straight in with a magnificent putt. Europe two ahead and captain Thomas Bjørn lets out a smirk – still early days though.

McIlroy/Olesen a/s D.Johnson/Fowler (6)

09:19: From the Sky Sports coverage you wouldn’t have guessed that Rory McIlroy was in action this morning. We did just see his four ball partner Thorbjorn Olesen squander a glories chance to go 1UP. Still level.

1UP Rose/Rahm vs Koepka/Finau (6)

09:15: Is this momentum I’m seeing?! Koepka does his best top salvage something after his wayward tee shot but he was always facing a tough task and his 15-footer rolls short to allow Just Rose to win the seventh. Rahm and Rose looking good.

Le Golf National

09:12: So with narrow fairways and penal rough, not to mention the large expanses of water on the first and 18th holes in particular, the 7,183-yard Parisian layout has not offered many gifts.

1UP Molinari/Fleetwood vs Reed/Woods (4)

09:10: Oh we like that, Tommy! There’s blue back on the board as Tommy Fleetwood gets off the mark when negotiating the longest par four on the course to tickle away a birdie. Europe take a one-shot lead.

Casey/Hatton vs Spieth/Thomas 2UP (5)

09:05: Do me a favour! We always knew this would be a really tough pairing for Casey and Hatton against the two American juggernauts. Spieth continues to dominate and goes 2UP when draining a 40-footer on the fifth.

Rose/Rahm a/s Koepka/Finau (6)

09:00: Rose and Rahm look to respond immediately as Finau turns from hero to zero! Having just bagged an eagle, Finau sends it straight out of bounds on the 7th and Koepka sends his drive into thick hay. Big chance for Europe to take this hole.

Casey/Hatton v Spieth/Thomas 1UP (4)

08:55: Spieth is relentless today. Hatton has a birdie chance on 4 but he’s sent that right of the hole. The American has a tough 15-footer himself. He’s coolness personified as he sinks it to remain 1UP.

Twitter round-up

Ally: When a birdie on a par 4 is not good enough to halve a hole! Justin Rose deserved more there but good for Tony Finau.

Jon: Aaarghhh don’t want to go to work, loving the Ryder Cup as always. Hoping I’ll get the chance to listen at some point. Come on Europe!!!

Harry: Europe can’t hole a bloody thing, looks ominous already. Olesen isn’t made for this he’s still a nervous wreck!

Tight…

08:50: These four ball matches are so tight that there is barely anything in it. Team USA have a narrow advantage but that can evaporate in the blink of an eye. Time for a coffee, I think. Standby…

Rose/Rahm a/s Koepka/Finau (6)

08:43: What a strange reaction?! Justin Rose throws his 3 wood to the floor in frustration on the short par four sixth, but he’s made the green! Wish I could be angry at a shot like that.

Brooks Koepka, meanwhile, drags one into the spectators and actually catches a women just above the eye. Fingers crossed she’ll be alright.

Koepka might be shaken up, but Finau looks settled as he secures an two-putt eagle on the sixth. A birdie isn’t enough for Rose as the Americans level things up.

Molinari/Fleetwood a/s Reed/Woods (2)

08:40: Take a bow, Tiger Woods. He’s just played an utterly delightful lofted chip shot to within five-feet of the hole. His partner Patrick Reed also has a possible eagle opportunity from the far side of the green. Molinari saves Europe (now that’s a headline) who manages to match Tiger’s birdie.

1UP Rose/Rahm vs Koepka/Finau (5)

08:35: It’s not been a great start for debutant Finau, who has bogeyed three of his opening four holes. It could get even worse with Rose within 12 feet…

Rose, who won £7.6million on Sunday by claiming the FedEx Cup title in Atlanta, rolls it wide and Finau tickles a confidence-boosting par in from six feet.

Casey/Hatton v Spieth/Thomas 1UP (3)

08:30: Jordan Spieth shuts the door on Casey and Hatton on the fourth. Casey’s got himself an eagle chance on the par-five third but settles for a birdie. Spieth, however, responds with a nine-footer.

CALM FURYK

08:27: US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk said he would not be pulling out a chest-beating motivational speech. Patrick Reed will have been disappointed about that I’m sure.

“I’ve thought about trying to message the players for a year and a half now. I’m not really a cheerleader, a ‘ra-ra’ type of person so when I message them I try to be as short as possible,” he said. “You pick what is the most important and hammer home the points.”

He makes this golf lark sound simple…

Molinari/Fleetwood a/s Reed/Woods (2)

08:23: Ah, the great start has subsided with both of the Europeans taking a roll in the sand. They are clearly spooked by the water but overcompensated. Reed also plays it safe before Woods decides to go straight at it, and lands a beautiful long iron four feet from the hole.

Fortune favours the brave, as they say. Barring a disaster, we’ll be level at the second… and we are. Fleetwood and Molinari concede the second.

McIlroy/Olesen A/S Johnson/Fowler (3)

08:20: You just can’t split this group with the quartet sharing a third straight hole.

1UP Rose/Rahm vs Koepka/Finau (4)

08:17: Nerves of steel from Justin Rose, who saves par with fine putt from eight feet that rattles it straight into the cup. Koepka can’t seize the advantage from roughly the same patch – he’s not put enough on it and it’s halved.

1UP Molinari/Fleetwood vs Reed/Woods (1)

08:10: Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed look strangely nervous. Woods sends it onto the fringe, so it’s all on Reed to deliver, but the sounds of delirious cheers from the crowd tell me that he’s found the water.

No such problems for Open champion Francesco Molinari, he’s set himself up nicely for a birdie… sinks it! I guess you could say that the underdogs find themselves ahead!

Rose/Rahm v Koepka/Finau (3)

08:07: Whoosh! Rahm and Koepka trade blows at the third with the Spaniard chipping to 12 feet from the rough. Koepka then misses his third birdie opportunity of the morning when nudging it to the right and Rahm sinks it. Europe remain one ahead.

Casey/Hatton vs Spieth/Thomas 1UP (1)

08:01: No Dustin Johnson nerves for Jordan Spieth, who safely puts for a birdie.

Molinari/Fleetwood vs Reed/Woods

07:57: Here comes Tiger! Yes, a rejuvenated and 14-time major winner Tiger Woods is back. He claimed the Tour Championship on Sunday for his first tournament win since August 2013 and his 80th PGA Tour title. He’s alongside Captain America’ Patrick Reed, who as the pantomime villain receives loud boos. Standard.

Tommy Fleetwood has two reasons to celebrate today as his son Franklin also turns one.

“What a match for your first ever match in a Ryder Cup. I’m feeling good,” Fleetwood said. “I am looking forward to my son’s first birthday: Tiger Woods and Patrick Reed in the Ryder Cup and my son’s first birthday – it will be a day to remember.”

No drama for the quartet, who all find the fairway with drives straight and true. All four pairings are underway.

Casey/Hatton vs Spieth/Thomas

07:55: Good grief, Jordan Spieth nearly completes a miraculous Eagle with a terrific approach shot that circles the hole before before rolling two-feet away. That should be an opening birdie for USA.

Paul Casey finds the water so the pressure is all on Tyrrell Hatton, who collectively finds the green and gets a tidy roll to land ten feet away. Spieth should have this.

1UP Rose/Rahm vs Koepka/Finau (2)

07:50: Share of the spoils on the second. Brooks Koepka is close to winning but Justin Rose isn’t in the mood to relinquish the advantage and matches the American.

Casey/Hatton vs Spieth/Thomas

07:45: So, Paul Casey, playing in his first Ryder Cup for 10 years, joins debutant Tyrrell Hatton on the first. They have the daunting task of taking on Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.

McIlroy/Olesen a/s D.Johnson/Fowler (1)

07:40: DJ taking charge and following Rose’s lead with a cracking wedge that flirts with the pin – He’ll be making birdie from there. McIlroy looks to respond but he’s around 15 feet right of the hole. This will need to be rather special from the Northern-Irishman…

Nope. It was a very tricky downhill breaker and McIlroy tickles it a few inches left of the pin. DJ surely makes no mistake from here…

He’s missed it! That is a glaring miss from Johnson, who misses a sitter from all of three-feet away. Amazing what these nerves will do, eh?

1UP Rose/Rahm v Koepka/Finau (1)

07:35: First blood to Europe. Koepka shaves the right side of the cup before Rose rolls it in. We’re in business, folks.

Johnson/Fowler vs McIlroy/Olesen – Water!

07:30: Huge roar for Rory and Thorbjorn as the second pairing gets underway. You have to feel a bit worried for Olesen, who looks like he’s gasping for air. I know for a fact that the Dane enjoyed one last cigarette before making his way to the first tee this morning. Let’s hope it worked!

In the drink! Olesen, the rookie, sends his first shot of the Ryder Cup straight in the drink. Looks like this is all on McIlroy, who splits the fairway with his drive. Solid. DJ arrows one in the same territory while Fowler finds the rough.

Sublime…

07:25: Bosh! It’s a Rosey start for Europe… see what I did there? I’ll see myself out…

Rose and Rahm both have tap-ins to start the first hole with birdies after two magnificent second shots. Koepka has a seven-footer for birdie and Tony Finau was gone with that opening howler.

Up next…

07:17: Rory McIlroy, in his fifth Ryder Cup, and rookie Thorbjorn Olesen are up against world number one Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler. They start at 07:25.

Koepka/Finau vs Rose/Rahm

07:15: Spaniard Jon Rahm clearly thrives under these conditions. He rallies the crowd before firing the perfect tee shot down the centre of the fairway. Justin Rose with a solid approach.

Above is a snap of Tony Finau’s opening tee shot of the Ryder Cup. Heart in mouth would be an understatement…

We’re away…

07:10: I can’t even imagine taking your first tee-shot at a Ryder Cup with thousands of European fans signing and jeering around you. I get nervous enough on the driving range if there’s anyone decent present.

This is just organised mayhem.

Finau, wearing a white baseball cap, manages to squeeze out a faint anxious smile as he walks up to get the four balls underway.

Oooooh! Goodness me, Finau spanks a 300-yard three-iron that trickles off the fairway and is about two inches from landing in the drink. Brooks Koepka follows with a more cautious approach.

Europe up next…

Five-minute klaxon

07:05: Good morning folks and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Ryder Cup!

Sorry I’m late to get us started this morning – Southern Rail clearly didn’t get the message that this is basically Christmas for golf fans and decided to cancel all their services.

Anyway, It’s officially time for the 42nd Ryder Cup at Le Golf National.

I’ll be bringing you all of the news, scores and updates throughout the day.

Europe’s Justin Rose and rookie Jon Rahm take on Brooks Koepka, winner of three of the last seven majors, and debutant Tony Finau.

The quartet are walking through an absolutely packed course with thousands of spectators creating a thunderous atmosphere… literally because they are doing the Icelandic thunderclap!
