It’s a good fit: Cooper has just picked up huge acclaim for his directorial debut A Star Is Born, and already knows the Marvel and Guardians world well thanks to his work with Rocket.
However, he has shot down the idea that he could take over from Gunn – for one reason in particular.
“In directing it? I could never direct anything that I didn’t write,” he told Joe. “No, I could never direct anything that I didn’t write.”
Given that Sean Gunn recently claimed Disney still plan on using James Gunn’s screenplay, then, it seems Cooper won’t be stepping up to the plate.
Sean – who plays Kraglin and does the mo-cap for Rocket – had told Tulsa World: “I don’t really know yet what’s going on with Guardians 3. I know that Disney still wants to make the movie.

It is unclear when Guardians 3 will be made now: it was originally intended to head into production in 2019, but this has now been pushed back.
James Gunn was fired earlier this year after conservative pundits – seemingly aiming to settle a score after the firing of Roseanne Barr from her TV show – shared offensive tweets of his from several years ago.
Gunn apologised and insisted the tweets did not represent his attitudes today, but despite the cast demanding he be re-instated, Disney stood by their decision.
The Guardians can be seen again, though, in next year’s Avengers 4 – which follows the almighty success of Avengers: Infinity War this spring.
All of the Guardians, except Rocket and Nebula, were dead by the end of the film – although are expected to return somehow.
Mantis star Pom Klementieff is reported to have been seen on set during reshoots, while Dave Baustista has also said that Drax will be seen.
As for Gamora, although Zoe Saldana is expected to appear in Avengers 4 in some capacity, it remains to be seen if and how she can be revived – because Gamora died separately from Thanos’s Snap.
She was hurled to her death by Thanos when he learned he would need to make a huge sacrifice in order to obtain the Soul Stone.
Avengers 4 is out on April 26, 2019.
