The duo were beaten by Jack Sock and Kevin Anderson on day one before Federer beat Nick Kyrgios in the singles on day two.
Novak Djokovic lost his singles match to Anderson as Team Europe ended the second day 7-5 ahead.
The doubles match will be remembered for a moment which saw Djokovic accidentally smash the ball at Federer.
The Serbian was reaching for a forehand and could only succeed in hitting it straight at 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer.
And the Swiss star has joked that Djokovic will not be returning to the Laver Cup next year now.
“He caught that forehand so late,” Federer told the Tennis Channel. “I don’t know what he was doing.
“He only saw me at that point, he thought ‘I’m only going for Roger’.
“He got me good!
“He doesn’t get an invite back, he knows,” Federer laughed. “That’s why he came to apologise.
“All kidding aside, I had a great time in the doubles. It was always going to be difficult but we were pretty happy with how we played.”
Djokovic ensured he said sorry straight after the incident in Chicago and revealed details of the conversation..
He said: “I apologised right away.
“It didn’t look that great.”
Tennis pundit Mark Petchey thinks it’ll be the last time Djokovic and Federer ever team up again.
“I’m sure from both players’ point of view, this is something very different,” he said.
“They’ve been there, done that, on everything. Now this is a very unique occasion.
“I’m not sure if it’ll ever happen on the ATP Tour. It obviously hasn’t happened for Rafa and Roger since last year.
“This maybe the only time they step on court unless we get a deciding doubles.”
