Suspiria: ‘It’s TWISTED’ Dakota Johnson speaks out on ‘intense’ horror after mixed reviews

It’s safe to say that the remake – which is out in cinemas in November – has definitely caused a stir amongst everyone who has seen it so far.

Critics have had wildly varying responses, and there have even been reports of walkouts due to the movie’s deeply unsettling and graphic content.

“It’s really interesting to see and hear people’s reactions to the film,” Johnson – who has the lead role – told Vogue Australia.

“It’s very, very intense, but ultimately we had so much fun, and making movies is so much fun anyway, and so when you make something that provokes people, it’s really interesting, and it’s an exciting and mischievous position to be in.”

She had earlier called the movie “twisted”, saying: “The film is very, very intricate. And there is a lot to absorb.

“It’s about a young woman who travels to Berlin to study at this prestigious dance company and it’s post-war Germany and it’s a very volatile time, a time when women were very expressive and angry and they were not afraid to show it.

“Then you realise that something is not right at the dance academy and it seems to be run by witches.”

She added: “It is sort of this young woman’s journey, discovering who she is and it’s really powerful and shocking.

“It was a shocking experience, a beautiful experience, and it was like a lot of work and a lot of learning and a lot of focus and diligence – but it was just so much fun.”

Johnson shot to fame in the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy, which seems to have opened a whole host of doors for her.

In addition to Suspiria, she also has another new movie en route before the end of the year: Bad Times At The El Royale, which is also something of a nail-biter.

This isn’t the first time Johnson has responded to the mixed reactions Suspiria has been getting.

“It’s a true work of art on [director Luca Guadagnino’s] part,” she previously told the Inquirer.

“I am thrilled to be a part of it. Of course, it’s nice to be involved in a film where everybody leaves the theatre happy, but then, do they go home and talk about it?”

She continued: “It’s a privilege to be involved in a film where people want to argue about what’s happening, because it’s really time for art to express the things that we need to express.”

Suspiria is out on November 11.
