Champion female golfer, 22, murdered – body dumped on golf course

Celia, who was the European Ladies’ Amateur champion and a golf player at Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames, died after she was assaulted. 

Police have charged Collin Daniel Richards, a 22-year-old man for her murder.

Golfers at the golf course found an unattended bag on Monday, September 17, which was when the police were called. 

Ames Police released a statement saying: “Golfers had located a golf bag with no one around it on the course.

“Officers responded and subsequently located a boy some distance away.

“During the course of the investigation, officers determined the victim had been assaulted and died as a result.

“The investigation led to a suspect Colin Daniel Richards, age 22, has been charged with murder in the first degree.”

The head women’s golf coach at the university, Christie Martens, said: “We are all devastated.

 

“Celia was a beautiful person who was loved by all her team-mates and friends. She loved Iowa State and was an outstanding representative for our school. We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life.”

The university said she “was one of the most accomplished players in Cyclone golf history”.

The university’s athletics director, Jamie Pollard, said: “Celia had an infectious smile, a bubbly personality and anyone fortunate enough to know her was blessed.”

Celia was ranked at 69 nationally by Golfweek and she was only the third ISU women’s golfer to compete in the US Women’s Open Championship.

Dr. Wendy Wintersteen, Iowa State University President, said: “This is a tragic and senseless loss of a talented young woman and an acclaimed student athlete.

“We mourn with her family and friends in Spain, her teammates here and all who knew her.

“On behalf of the entire Cyclone family, I extend our deep condolences to Celia’s family and her many friends and teammates at Iowa State. We are deeply saddened.”
