Rafael Nadal: Why is star not playing with Roger Federer at Laver Cup? Reasons explained

The Spaniard was defeated by compatriot Juan Martin Del Potro in the US Open semi-final.

He lost the first two sets 7-6 (3), 6-2, before having to retire with an injury.

The 32-year-old appeared to suffer a knee injury early in the third set, and the injury forced him out of the game.

Last year, Nadal played as Team Europe won the inaugural trophy.

He lined up alongside Roger Federer in the mens’ doubles in a historic moment for the sport.

Nadal’s omission means fans will have to wait another year before a possible repeat of this feat.

Why is Nadal not competing?

Nadal has not been selected, in part due to a scheduling conflict with the Davis Cup.

Before Wimbledon this year, Nadal announced that he was not playing in the tournament due to the timing.

However, Nadal was unable to play in the Davis Cup due to the injury he sustained against Del Potro.

He will still not compete in the Laver Cup, however, and will instead turn his attention to recovering from injury.

When is the Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup runs from September 21 to September 23.

Matches are held at the United Center in Chicago.

This year will be the second time the tournament has taken place, after last year’s inaugural tournament.

What is the Laver Cup?

The Laver Cup is a new tournament held over three days, in which teams from Europe and the Rest of The World compete.

In the style of The Ryder Cup, a team captain picks seven players from their designated area to compete for them.

Teams then play a series of singles and doubles against each other.
